…as PDP holds 102nd NEC meeting

As political stakeholders strategise for the 2027 polls, the North Central Renaissance Movement (NCRM) has called for the zoning of presidential tickets of major political parties to the North-Central.

The Chairperson of the group, Prof. K’tso Nghargbu, in a communique released in Abuja, said the zone had made remarkable contributions to Nigeria’s political stability and socio-economic development over the years.

It noted that despite the sacrifices made by the zone, it had neither produced the President nor the Vice-President of the country.

The group highlighted the zone’s sacrifices, pointing to its role in housing the Federal Capital Territory, providing power through hydroelectric dams, supporting agricultural development through groundnut pyramids and tin mining, and its loyalty during the civil war.

The communique noted, “We will no longer accompany other zones as escorts, backbenchers, spectators, or political underdogs to the glorious location called Nigeria.

“Being the only geopolitical zone that has never produced a civilian President or Vice-President since Independence, the time for North Central to lead the country is now.”

It further stated that the zone’s ethnic and cultural diversity, which hosts the Hausa/Fulani, Yoruba, Igbo, and numerous indigenous groups, positions it uniquely to promote inclusivity, tolerance, and unity in governance.

The NCRM opposed what it described as “tokenistic gestures” of offering the zone party chairmanship or other secondary roles, stressing that its demand is solely for the presidency in 2027.

The movement said granting the North Central zone the presidency would not only strengthen national cohesion but also signal a commitment to fairness and inclusivity across the federation.

The RCRM, therefore, called on Nigerians across all regions to support its quest for leadership, promising that the North Central’s stewardship would “foster a new era of cooperation, progress, and development for all Nigerians.”

The call came ahead of the National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) fixed for Monday, August 25.

The meeting will deliberate on the zoning of key positions ahead of the Elective National Convention of the party coming up in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, on November 15.
