Astrong case has been made for politicians to prioritise electorates’ welfare well beyond electioneering. This is because the wellbeing of electorates requires steady and deliberate planning that must be sustained regularly rather than during campaigns.
Lawmaker representing Warri North/Warri South/Warri South West Federal Constituency, Thomas Ereyitomi, who made the call warned:
“The elections are near again. Many politicians will be coming to knock on your doors begging for your votes and making all sorts of promises they cannot keep to woo you in order to get your votes for a fresh four-year mandate.
“Please, think twice before making any such commitments to them. Some of them are only coming to make empty promises to you. Once they get what they want, they leave you for another four years again before you will see them.
“I don’t promise what I cannot do. I’ve been around for a while and I’ve identified with you all. My coming around you have been on a regular basis and I don’t wait for campaign period to fulfil my commitments to you.
“Yes, we are approaching another election year and I will also be coming up to knock on your doors too. Please, if I do open for me. And as you are all aware that from that last election to now, the dynamics have changed. I came then under the platform of the People Democratic Party (PDP) but today Delta State is no longer PDP but APC.
“And because we are now under APC, that means we are standing on the mandate of President Bola Tinubu. We have the More Agenda for a Renewed Hope of Governor Francis Oborevwori and myself alongside others. I want you all to open your doors wider then so that you can allow our new team come in to deliver more of the dividends of democracy to you in your communities in particular and the state in general.”
Ereyitomi was speaking in Warri during celebration of the Eid al-Fitr. The Madugu of Arewa communities in the three Warri council areas, gave N2 million each to leaders of 10 mosques within Warri and its environs “to support development and enhance improved conditions of worshipers at the mosques.”
Francis Omatseye said it Ereyitomi’s goodwill that had continued to “endear him to the people both within and outside his constituency.”
