The University of Ibadan has appointed its first female bursar in 78 years, a development the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Kayode Adebowale, described as a reflection of the institution’s tradition of excellence and commitment to merit.

The new bursar, Mrs Mariam Adetoun Zakariyah, FCA, formally assumed duty at a ceremony held at the University.

Speaking at the event, Professor Adebowale said the foundation of UI was built on an enduring culture of excellence, integrity and service. He noted that the appointment process was fair, transparent, and free of gender or religious bias.

He commended the outgoing bursar, Mr Adewuyi Popoola, for sustaining the financial stability of the university throughout his tenure, and said the smooth transition of leadership remains one of UI’s institutional strengths.

According to him, the university’s reputation as Nigeria’s first and best university is not defined by its physical structures alone, but by how it conducts its affairs and upholds sound values. He described Mrs Zakariyah’s appointment as a significant milestone in the history of the institution.

In her remarks, Mrs Zakariyah thanked the vice-chancellor and the university management for a seamless appointment process.

She pledged to deploy her professional expertise to justify the confidence reposed in her and to ensure effective service delivery in the Bursary Department.

She also solicited the continued support of management and staff to succeed in her new role.

Prayers for a successful tenure were offered by the chief imam of the university, Professor Ibrahim Olatunde Uthman, and the chaplain of the Chapel of the Resurrection, the Ven. Dr Victor Idowu Oladele.
